Imagine a great disaster destroys all the world's literature. How much of it would you remember and be able to pass on to future generations? Which three stories most deserve to be told? Would you attempt to retell them exactly as the original author had or make changes to improve them or make them more useful to a recovering society? Now choose one and write it.

Carry a notebook or scrap of paper around with you today. Make a list of the interesting words and phrases people use. If you live and/or work alone, you may have to spend a little time eavesdropping in a public place (like the mall or grocery store). At the end of the day, work as many of those words and phrases as possible into a conversation between characters.
