Center a scene around a sporting event and let the last shot, touchdown, home run, strike, goal, or play be the climactic moment.
Turn your favorite nursery rhyme into a dramatic short story. Was there a reason Jack and Jill fell down the hill? Why did Peter eat pumpkins? How did the crooked man come to be so crooked? Get creative.
Carry a notebook or scrap of paper around with you today. Make a list of the interesting words and phrases people use. If you live and/or work alone, you may have to spend a little time eavesdropping in a public place (like the mall or grocery store). At the end of the day, work as many of those words and phrases as possible into a conversation between characters.
